Sherry Vine Serenades with Songs Set in the Key of Filth–Oct. 22, NYC

BY SCOTT STIFFLER | Long before people wracked their brains trying to figure out how Trump gets away with it, we were in awe of drag queen Sherry Vine’s ability to be the good-time gal who somehow walks away unscathed (and uncancelled!) from the many mortifying words and phrases  that exit her bad, bad mouth. And THAT, we assure you, is where the comparisons between the two end.

The sharp and sweet Miss Vine (whom we would swoon over even if she didn’t write for us) is a lovable, longtime practitioner of the “Profane Pop Parody” (PPP) artform. As practiced to perfection by Sherry and a handful of others (including Jackie Beat and Lady Bunny), PPP happens when an entertainer takes a classic or contemporary hit song, replaces the lyrics with complete and utter filth, and sings it—straight. Typical audience reactions range from spit-take shock, to laughs of recognition, to delayed reaction satisfaction. That’s what happens when you cringe, then laugh, after the person sitting beside you explains the meaning of stuff like “pegging” or “snowballing”—or other time-tested queer coupling tricks, whose slang terms may be flying under the radar of certain mainstream, missionary-minded audience members.
