BY SCOTT STIFFLER | “Live, sonic, supernatural storytelling” is the promise of The Listening, a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it theatrical excursion set to materialize a mere 20 times over six successive days, playing to a strict head count of 30 headphone-wearing souls per performance.
“Intimate” and “immersive” are among the inviting buzzwords that populate the press release—but one suspects they’re actually agents of misdirection, meant to mask the full force of deeply felt, hallucinatory frights that await, in the form of a communal experience calibrated to take audiences through a “theatrical universe where every sound, word, and breath surrounds them.”
The production features the work of queer artists, including cast member Jason Veasey (currently seen on Fox TV’s Best Medicine) and, as the omnipresent narrator, history-making trans Tony nominee L Morgan Lee. Also firmly ensconced in the queer contingent are writer Jeffrey James Keyes and creator Aaron Salazar. The cast also includes Morgan Siobhan Green (Hadestown), and up-and-comer David Israeli.
April 7–12 at East Village Basement (321 East 9th St., NYC). Tickets are $60 each, with $45 daily rush tickets available while supplies last. For reservations and more information, visit TheListening.com.
