RUMIPALOOZA: Trolling For Dick in Argentina & MORE
Thursday, January 22, 7pm
At the Bureau of General Services—Queer Division
2nd floor, LGBT Community Center (208 W. 13th St.)
Reclusive?
Elusive?
Silly?
Sly?
Sexy?
Shamanic?
What do you say about a quicksilver queer who spent decades as a card-carrying slipper of society’s surly bonds?
January 22’s event, set to take place in the luscious loin of The Big Apple, seems poised to peel back a layer or two of one seemingly impenetrable onion.
The LGBTQ History Project hosts this enlightening, empowering, stimulating glimpse into the seldom-seen world of Rumi Missabu. The daffy, hard-to-define dick-detector first nursed his knack for perpetual self-invention while performing with The Cockettes, a 1970s San Francisco-based troupe whose midnight drag performances endure in lasting legacy and lurid legend.
Equally legendary, if a might more murky, was what became of Missabu after this time spent with his glitter-kissed theatrical brethren. “For 35 years,” say the minds behind January 22’s RUMIPALOOZA event, “Rumi didn’t have a driver’s license or a Social Security number. He only carried a library card that said Rumi Missabu.”
Intrigued? Join longtime Rumi admirers and perhaps find yourself among the newly minted converts at this “reading and exploration of his archive, which offers a glimpse into the glittering chaos.” The list of expected readers are no slouches themselves in matters of independent spirit and sexual dynamism. They include August Bernadicou, Agosto Machado, Mike Payne, Will Shellhorn, Shelby Black, Joe E. Jeffreys, and Perry Brass.
Can’t be there in person, to see it all go down? The righteously ribald, sex-positive shindig will live-stream on the YouTube channel of host venue, The Bureau of General Services—Queer Division.
For those of a mind to do it brick and mortar style, the Bureau notes, “Registration is not required. Seating is first come, first served… To reserve a copy of Trolling for Dick in Argentina (paperback, $15) please write to us at contact@bgsqd.com with “please reserve Trolling for Dick in Argentina for January 22 event” in the subject line.”
